Board of Directors

The Rexdale Women's Centre is governed by a dedicated and committed Board of Directors comprised of volunteers who fulfill their fiduciary duties for the good of the organization. This dedicated group of individuals manages the organization's operations through policy development and service planning. The Board of Directors also ensures organizational goals are set and met and adopts and adheres to objectives and standards for effective service delivery and fiscal management.

Their commitment ensures the future success of the organization.

Sabina Filipescu, Honours B.A.

Sabina joined the board of directors of Rexdale Women's Centre in 2015. After moving to Ontario from Romania in 1998, Sabina and her family relied heavily on critical community supports in the first phase of settlement. This experience encouraged her to pursue a career in the Ontario Public Service, where she has been working since 2007 on the design and implementation of programs and services to benefit people across Ontario, including seniors groups and social assistance recipients. Sabina has served as Vice-Chair of the Board, and in the past year she has served as the President of the Board.

Dr. Valentina Vaguengueim, MBA, Doctorate

Dr. Valentina Vaguengueim has over 15 years of Pharmaceutical, Clinical Research and Biotech experience in regulated environments of Canada, USA, Russia, Asia, LatAm and Europe. In the course of her career, Valentina worked for pharmaceutical and clinical research giants as well as smaller innovative firms providing strategic leadership of all aspects of operations, regulatory compliance, client relationships, innovation and project management. She was involved in research of innovative technologies and the development and growth of a small business. Currently, Valentina oversees regulatory licensing projects for international clients at CCI. Valentina has completed an Executive MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. She also is a volunteer advisor to healthcare ventures at MaRS Discovery District.

Gentiana Shyti, CPA, CGA

Gentiana Shyti is a Certified Public Accountant who holds both CPA and CGA designations. She moved to Toronto from Tirana, Albania to seek a better life opportunity in Canada in 2000. Apart from the Master degree from University of Nebraska she pursued her career in Accounting and Finance to become a Certified General Accountant in 2007. She is currently working for E-One Entertainment as Financial Reporting Manager. She has been working in various other senior finance roles since she finished her Bachelor degree in 1992. In her free time she loves to help community in various parent school boards and Ontario Girls Guide volunteer jobs and events. Gentiana has served as treasurer on the board.

Florentina G. Stancu-Soare,
Senior Manager, Regulatory and Consumer Affairs Canadian Marketing Association

Florentina is the Senior Manager of Regulatory and Consumer Affairs at the Canadian Marketing Association. Working with the Public Affairs and Thought Leadership team to promote a healthy and robust marketplace for businesses and consumers, she manages several regulatory committees, the CMA's Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, supporting compliance and best practices guidelines, and provides regulatory guidance to CMA members.

An experienced public affairs and communications professional and has amassed an impressive list of advocacy wins and has a proven track record as a project manager, campaign designer and effective stakeholder engagement and consensus builder.

Prior to re-joining the CMA in 2017, she was a key member of the Canadian Cancer Society's public issues team. Among the many hats she wore at the Society, she was also lucky to oversee and work with an incredible team of over 200 passionate and talented volunteers. She was also the Chair of the Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance's Advocacy Sub-Committee and the Ontario Collaborative Group on Healthy Eating and Active Living.


Aida Bejte, MA, CMA, CPA, MBA

Aida is an authentic business leader with a "can do" attitude who believes in hard work and helping others succeed. She is a strong supporter of Rexdale Women's Centre and as an immigrant to Canada herself, she wants to help in any way she can to improve the lives of women and families in need. Aida joined Rexdale Women's Centre's board of directors in September 2014. Since 2014, Aida has been the Controller - Head of Finance for the Donald Group of Companies, a local construction company. Aida has served as treasurer. Aida is a member of the Society of the Certified Management Accountants of Ontario and holds an Executive MBA from Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Tirana, Albania.

Ankita Bhardwaj, B.Eng, MBA

Ankita Bhardwaj is currently working as a Product Manager at Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices managing the portfolio of Electrophysiology and Orthopedic products. She recently completed her MBA at Rotman School of Management. Prior to this, she had over 5 years of international experience in the automotive industry in areas of purchasing, quality, sales and marketing at Volvo and Toyota. Ankita moved to Canada 2 years ago and is passionate about being an integral part of the community in her new home.

Hamdi Jimale,
Working Towards Master of Public Policy, Hons B.A.

For the last three years, Hamdi has worked in the municipal and non-profit sector towards an equitable Toronto. With the City of Toronto, Hamdi oversaw programs related to employment, housing, and community partnerships. As the former Director of Internal Affair of the Toronto Youth Cabinet, Hamdi represented the voices of 320,000 young people inside Toronto City Hall. Since 2015, Hamdi has been a volunteer Disaster Responder with the Canadian Red Cross, where she has supported vulnerable families and women impacted by disasters. Hamdi is currently completing a Master of Public Policy at the University of Toronto.

Elena Kaminsky, B.A (HONS.), J.D.

Elena is a legal counsel and social justice advocate. In her professional life, her expertise has included both employer and employee advice and representation on a wide range of labour and employment issues in Ontario and British Columbia, including human rights and workers' compensation benefits. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Creative Writing from York University (2007) and a Juris Doctor from Western University (2011). Elena has volunteered for Olivia Chow's office, the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/ Multicultural Women Against Rape 24-Hour Crisis Line and Vancouver Rape Relief & Women's Shelter, and Toronto's and Vancouver's Fringe Festivals.

Asvini Keerawella, MBA, B.A in Economics

Asvini Keerawella is the Senior Manager, National Programs at MaRS Discovery District (MaRS), where she leads projects focused on the implementation of strategic priorities across the Venture Services team. Most recently she has been managing the MaRS FedDev Scale-Up Platform, a collaboration among Communitech, Invest Ottawa and MaRS that will help thousands of high-growth firms attract more customers, talent, sales and capital, and increase their potential to become $100-million-plus anchor companies. Asvini has an MBA from the Schulich School of Business, York University and B.A. in Economics from the University of British Columbia.

Lara Roccatani,
Hons. B.A., Fundraising & Volunteer Management Certificate

Lara joined the Rexdale Women's Centre board in 2017. She is a University of Toronto graduate with over 9 years experience in the not-for-profit sector working for a variety of NGOs including NIFC, MSF, Earth Rangers, University of Toronto, the Green Party of Canada. Lara also is a volunteer with a community group sponsoring their second family from Syria. Lara has lived in Rexdale for 28 years and has a keen interest in helping improve the opportunities available for women, and their families, living in Rexdale today.
