Violence
Prevention and Crisis Intervention
Violence
Prevention and Crisis Counselling: As a womens
organization, many women who have sought out our services
have requested assistance in dealing with the violence that
they are experiencing in their lives. For some women, assistance
comes in the form of disclosure and support. This may also
lead to developing safety plans and perhaps ultimately leaving
the abusive relationship. The Centre provides one-on-one assistance
to women who are experiencing violence in the home or dealing
with a crisis in their lives.
Medical
and legal referrals and client accompaniment: The
Centres staff provides, culturally and linguistically
sensitive services in guiding women to obtain medical and
legal services. Many times, our staff will accompany these
women as they attend these visits. Moreover, our staff will
provide on-going support as women face the difficult task
of navigating through the legal and court systems.
Support
Groups for Women and Spousal Abuse: Support groups
offer women a unique opportunity to gain information, share
experiences, to build confidence and to develop safety plans
when dealing with abuse. The Centre provides women with information
about their rights and how they can be supportive to other
women who are experiencing spousal abuse.
Partner
Assault Response Programme groups:
Statistics indicate that most women will experience abuse
at the hands of their male partners. Ending violence against
women involves working and educating men about the different
forms of abuse, the effects of violence on children, the pattern
of violent behaviour and developing alternatives to physical,
emotion and financial abuse. The Centre runs groups for court-mandated
offenders to better understand the violence against women,
work on accepting responsibility for their violent behaviour
and to develop strategies to deal with anger.
