Ethno-Cultural Seniors Programmes and Services

Communities around Canada are struggling and planning for resources and services for this quickly growing population. And in Rexdale, more and more seniors from diverse cultural groups, for many reasons, currently have limited access to community resources and services. Increasingly, immigrant and ethno-cultural seniors struggle with isolation caused, in part, from not having the financial means to go out or from being left alone all day. These feelings of isolation also increase their health risks.

The Centre offers many programmes and services for ethno-cultural seniors in their own language. In addition, seniors engage with other seniors from other cultures, share views, ideas, traditions and learn new skills.

The Centre provides:
Fitness classes
Computer and Internet training classes
Civic engagement involvement on community matters
Evening and social events and activities
Community forums on issues related to ethno-cultural seniors
Educational workshops on topics of interest to seniors
Excursions and trip in the community
Information on community resources and services

This past year, ethno-cultural seniors participated in a Life Storytelling project. Ethno-cultural seniors worked with trained storytellers, Four in Hand, to learn the art of storytelling. Ethno-cultural seniors were encouraged to tell their stories, reawaken their natural story telling abilities, promote folklore stories from their culture and build intergenerational and cultural skills in the community.
