Immigrant
Settlement and Adaptation Services: The Centre
offers services in 18 different languages at various locations
throughout Rexdale. Services include: reception, orientation,
translation, interpretation, referral to community resources,
solution focused counselling, general information, employment-related
services,and assistance with filling out forms.
English
Language Instruction: The ability to understand
and speak English enables newcomers to fully participate in
life in Canada. In the Canadian labour market, English is
a must and a second language is an asset. Individuals destined
for the labour market, regardless of level of expertise, need
to be able to read, write and speak English.
Language
Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC): Classes
are available for Permanent Residents, Ministerial Permit
holders or individuals who have been recognized as a Convention
Refugees. The Centre offered various part-time and full-time
classes ranging from Level 1 to Level 4. The LINC programme
curriculum focused on building day-to-day English language
skills with emphasis on orientation and information for newcomers
about Canadian systems and services. The programme is also
focused on building participants' computers skills. The LINC
programme assisted registered women with small children and
seniors with free childminding and travel assistance.
English
as a Second Language Classes: This programme is
open to Canadian Citizens, Refugee claimants, Permanent Residents,
Ministerial Permit holders and anyone who has a permit to
stay in Canada. This programme operates in partnership with
the Toronto District School Board. Lesson themes are designed
to build English language as well as life skills.
